Ash, a Texan lesbian and augmented reality programmer working for a gaming company in Japan, has been tasked with doing quality assurance on her company’s latest project - an AR “live-in girlfriend” designed for lonely shut-in men. Although Ash is initially skeptical on the concept, she discovers that the “girlfriend” she’s testing, Iris, isn’t just some program, but a pushy young woman insistent on fulfilling her programming and being the best girlfriend she can for Ash. Exasperated, Ash teaches Iris to look beyond her basic programming and Iris takes up a hobby learning American Sign Language long distance from another AI named Roger. Iris also teaches Ash to open up and be more vulnerable, and soon enough the two strike up a genuine romance.
